THE POROUS
OFFICE DEVELOPMENT | COMMERCIAL | PROJECT III | 2019 - 2020
We are living in a thought realm; like a cocoon it surrounds us. This thought realm knows nothing of the great space without an object. We find little peace, searching for answers to questions that ultimately have no answers. And, in this searching we are wearing ourselves out. Therefore, this project aims to create an enlightened space for employers to practice mindfulness within the dense city of Little India.
The project proposal is to design an enlightened office space for employers to practice mindfulness within the city area of Little India. An office is a place for people to share, teach, work, and practice methods of mental purification, which allows one to face life’s tensions and problem in a calm and balance way of life. The designed office aims to provides a peaceful environment where the contemplative life can develop and be protected against the complexity of an urban dweller, as the millennial generation stands on the brink of a technological revolution.
LOCATION
The site sits on the fridge of Little India Edge, between the junction of central planning and residential development. Amongst these newer developments are inclining buildings with approximately 10 new residential and commercial developments constructed over the last two years.

This project seeks to propose a commercial foreign bank development, which will play an important role not only to Little India, but also to the building of close proximity to the site. This industry aims to contribute to the growth of Little Indian’s development. A vision that aims to provide specialises financial services, personalised financial services, personal consultations, borrowing opportunities or investments strategies.

The site has a unique, cultural and social identity to the region that contributes to both Little India and Farrer Park, and is supported by the historical significance, the region boasts as many of the events, structures, and people have contributed to its inevitability. The region has always been recognized as a place of commerce, and as such, many people have settled there.

PLATONIC FORM vs ORGANIC FORM
An exploration of geometry with natural daylighting to create sensual experience is proposed. As a co-working space, one experiences the lightness of a building as a spatial encounter. As the continuity of the designaims to enhance the lightness of the building space, one can find a private space within a public space.
CONCEPT MODEL
Platonic and organic light shaft were used in the design idea within the office space, such as solids and voids. It is composed of a series of spatial sequences that challenges the distinction between inside and outside, open and enclosed, artificial light and natural daylight.

MASSING STRATEGIES
The first massing responses to the site of shophouse form with the back lanes. The second massing relates to solids and voids, voids as light shafts, to mimic the use of a lightwell within a shophouse. Third, the massing focuses to keep the building light by lifting it up and to setback the columns away from the building parameter to create a hovering effect. Fourth, the massing targets to incorporate open communal plaza and to response to the pedestrian path that cuts across the site. The last massing intends to incorporate a central lift core, exhibition space, networking space, and altered according to local building codes.

BOX LOUVER FACADE | ORGANIC & PLATONIC LIGHT SHAFT
There are 3 key zones, communal open plaza(on the 1st Storey), networking zone (on the lower half potion) and co-working zone (on the upper half potion of building).
The building skin uses box louver facade curtain wall with platonic and organic shape fenestration.
Organic and Platonic Light well were injected to the building to enhance the spatial experience of the work-space.

BASEMENT PARKING
Circular Light Shafts were placed above the ceiling of the basement parking space as this helps to provide a visual sense to Little India city fabric, inside out, upon one’s arrival to the basement.
COMMUNAL PUBLIC PLAZA
The journey of this project begins on the lower ground floor of the communal plaza. The idea is expressed by the significant use of communal green parks, as of how one travel uniquely along the nodal points of Little India. The circular structural column aims to express the tree truck. These truck-like columns are placed strategically to create an informal communication spaces that is akin to expressing gathering spaces under a large shaded tree of Little India’s vicinity.
2ND STOREY - EXHIBITION SPACE
The Exhibition Space has an interconnected spine that connects the 2nd Storey of the networking zone to the 4th Storey of the co-working zone. As the user ascend the stairway, the body will be energies by a 10m length of uninterrupted hollow light that us being thrown to the stairway.
3RD STOREY - COMMUNAL PUBLIC PLAZA
The compressed soffit helps to creates a light path to direct the user to the collaborative work-space of the co-working zone, this acts as a transitional space between the lower and upper level.
With abundances amount of light being channeled from the atrium to the stairway of the networking space.
4TH STOREY - ATRIUM / CO - WORKING SPACE
The atrium of the co-working space aims to reinforce a sense of buoyancy. The epoxy floor finishes were used to recreate a walk on the cloud, which aims to provides a floating sensation of a cloud light habitat.
Frosted glass ceiling were used to enhance the lightness of a space.
To appreciate the importance of time, box louvers façade were integrated to capture the movement of the sun’s rays within a day. Similar to how time would shape a space.
Apart from the box louvers, the box skylight has a depth of 2.4m. This helps to capture the 15 to 30mins of direct light ray during noon. The shimmering light recreates a vibrant source of energy to enhance the mood and the performance within a co-working space.
4TH STOREY - ATRIUM / COLLABORATIVE WORK-SPACE
The atrium of the organic light wells in contrast with the platonic fenestration has three different light intensity that were used to enhance the quality of a space. From defused to direct and to shallow light intensity as one transit within a space.
5TH STOREY - BREAKOUT READING SPACE (ORGANIC FORM)
The organic light shaft expresses the light-well within the shophouse. The interior form has a language of disorder which informs a sense of informality. With the nature of an organic form the space is designed to fit an informal space, for instance from a breakout zones to work lounge or to a library space.
6TH STOREY - STAIRWAY (PLATONIC FORM)
The platonic form has a certain rigid order which informs as a formal approach of how the body uses the space. This stairway is used as a transitional space between the non-privatised (5th Storey) to the privatized workspace (6th Storey), as the body ascend through the enclosed form, an abundant amount of natural light helps to enlighten the body’s emotion.
